San Juan

San Juan, Puerto RicoSan Juan is located in the Northern Coastal Plains region in the karst zone, north of Aguas Buenas and Caguas; east of Bayamón; and west of Carolina and Trujillo Alto. San Juan is the capital and largest city of Puerto Rico and oldest city in the Americas after Santo Domingo.

On November 19 1493, Christopher Columbus discovered the island of Puerto Rico on his second voyage to the New World. From accounts the island at that time was populated by as many as 50,000 Arawak Indians.

In 1508 Juan Ponce de León founded Caparra, now known as Pueblo Viejo, behind the harbor west of modern day San Juan. The settlement was abandoned and moved to what is now called Old San Juan.

Originally the newcomers called the island San Juan Bautista, for St. John the Baptist and the town Puerto Rico because of its obvious excellent potentialities. Juan Ponce de León, a lieutenant to Columbus, later named the city of Puerto Rico (“rich port”) which became Spain’s most important military outpost in the Caribbean.
