Louisville
Louisville was founded by General George Rogers Clark in 1778. In, 1780, Louisville’s first charter was signed by Thomas Jefferson. Fort Nelson appeared in 1781. The city is named after King Louis XVI of France for France’s assistance during the Revolutionary War.
Louisville is located on the banks of the Ohio River, between St. Louis and Cincinnati. It’s right at the center of a ring of Midwestern and Southern cities, the hub of a giant wheel containing St. Louis, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Lexington, Knoxville and Nashville. Louisville is within one days road travel to 60% of all major cities in the United States.
During the Civil War, Louisville was an important Union base of operations and a major military supply center. By 1830 Louisville surpassed Lexington as Kentucky’s largest city, with a population over 10,000.
