Kansas City
Located right along the border between the state of Kansas and the state of Missouri is Kansas City Missouri. The area known today as Kansas City was originally settled with the Kansa (Kaw) Native American tribe.
Kansas City’s first European visitor to the area was Étienne de Veniard, Sieur de Bourgmont in the late 1700s.. In 1833 John McCoy established West Port along the Santa Fe Trail then in 1834, McCoy established Westport Landing to serve as a landing point for West Port. Soon after, the Kansas Town Company, a group of investors, began to settle the area. In 1850 the landing area was incorporated as the Town of Kansas.
During the Civil War, the City of Kansas was the center of numerous battles where the Union army was mostly victorious. Following the Civil War, the city experienced rapid growth, primarily due to the arrival of the railroad in1869.
In 1897, Westport became part of Kansas City, by 1900, Kansas City was the 22nd largest city in the country, with a population of 163,752.
