Oklahoma City, the largest municipality in the state, lies at the centre of a six-county metropolitan area.

The territory that is modern day Oklahoma was sold to the United States by France as a result of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. Most of what is now Oklahoma was designated as Indian Territory.

Oklahoma StateOklahoma became a U.S. state on November 16, 1907, as the 46th state, it is one of the youngest state in the U.S.A. The first Europeans to explore the area was in 1541. In 1803 the area became a U.S. territory resulting from the Louisiana Purchase from France. It was originally designated as Indian Territory in 1834, then divided in 1890 as the Indian and Oklahoma Territories.

The U.S. government colonized the western parts of the territory by allowing six land runs between 1889 and 1895. Settlers came from from across the nation and other countries.

On April 22, 1889, the first day homesteading was permitted, 50,000 people swarmed into the area . Lands were offered to settlers through a series of horse races, those who tried to beat the noon starting gun were called Sooners.
During the early 1900s, Oklahoma became a center of oil production. Tulsa became known as the Oil Capital of the World.
