California

California became a U.S. territory in 1847 and on September 9, 1850 as the 31st state. California is located on the West Coast of the United States, bordered by Oregon to the north, Nevada to the northeast, Arizona to the southeast, the Mexican state of Baja California to the south, and the Pacific to the west.

Prior to the Gold Rush, migration to California was slow until 1848 when gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill. This marked the start of the California Gold Rush and influx of settlers in large numbers. The state of California has since been referred to as the ‘Golden’ state. In 1964, California surpassed New York to become the most populous state in the United States of America.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania, became the second state formed in the USA on December 12, 1787. In 1681 Pennsylvania was granted to William Penn, a Quaker, by King Charles II. Philadelphia is rich in American history, where the federal government resided for the better part from 1776 to 1800. The Declaration of Independence from England was signed here in 1776 along with the Constitution in 1787.
Philadelphia is one of the richest cities in American history.

Delaware

delaware stateDelaware became the first state in the United States on December 7, 1787. Delaware is located in the Mid-Atlantic region. The name derives from Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, Virginia’s first colonial governor.

Delaware is located in the northeastern portion of the Delmarva Peninsula and is the second smallest state in area (after Rhode Island). Estimates in 2009 rank the population of Delaware as 46th in the nation, but 6th in population density. Delaware is divided into three counties. From north to south, these three counties are New Castle, Kent, and Sussex. While the southern two counties have historically been predominantly agricultural, New Castle County has been more industrialized. The state ranks second in civilian scientists and engineers as a percentage of the workforce and number of patents issued to companies or individuals.

Pittsburgh

The location of Pittsburgh was chosen by an officer then Major, George Washington. During the 1800′s, the city of Pittsburgh became known as The Iron City and also as the The Smoky City because of all the smoke from the thousands of stacks in the city.

By the end of World War II steps were taken to clean up the air, which resulted in cleaner and normal air.

Dover, Delaware

Dover, DelawareWhen the Constitution was submitted to the states for ratification, Delaware was the first of the thirteen original states to ratify the Constitution of the United States. This unanimous ratification took place in a convention of Dover on December 7, 1787, whereby Delaware became the first state of the new Federal Union called the United States of America.

Dover was most famously the home of Caesar Rodney, the popular wartime leader of Delaware during the American Revolution. He is beleived to have been buried outside Dover, however the precise location of his grave is unknown.
