The city was established in 1758 and derives it’s name from William Pitt, a British statesman.
The location of Pittsburgh was chosen by an officer then Major, George Washington. During the 1800′s, the city of Pittsburgh became known as The Iron City and also as the The Smoky City because of all the smoke from the thousands of stacks in the city.
By the end of World War II steps were taken to clean up the air, which resulted in cleaner and normal air.
