Nashville

Nashville, TennesseThe settlement of Nashborough, was named after the Revolutionary War hero General Francis Nash. Two groups of pioneer settlers, led by the founding fathers James Robertson and Colonel John Donelson, came by land and by water from Fort Patrick Henry in East Tennessee. Nashville was founded on Christmas Eve 1779.
Col. Donelson’s daughter Rachel became the wife of Andrew Jackson, the United States seventh president.

In 1862, during the US Civil War, Nashville was overtaken by the Union army. In 1865 the Confederates attempted to regain control in what is known as the Battle of Nashville, considered as the last battle of the Civil War.

Memphis

memphis tennesseeMemphis was first visited by European explorer Hernando DeSoto, who crossed the Mississippi near Memphis in 1541. The French followed and Sieur de LaSalle build Fort Prudhomme around 1682. After the French and Indian War in 1763, England gained control of the area. President Andrew Jackson, General James Winchester and Judge John Overton are considered the founders of Memphis in 1819. Memphis was only four blocks wide and had a population of fifty people.

Memphis location was valued by both the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War. It became a military supply for the Confederacy before the being defeated at Shiloh. Soon after the river battle of June 6, 1862, Memphis became Union headquarters.

Tennessee

First visited by the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1540, the Tennessee area would later be claimed by both France and England. North Carolina ceded its western land, the Tennessee county, to the Federal Government. Congress designated the area as the Territory of the United States, South of the River Ohio. On January 8th, Andrew Jackson and his troops from Tennessee defeated the British army at the Battle of New Orleans.

The largest cities in Tennessee are Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga.
