Seattle
Seattle lies on a narrow strip of land between the salt waters of Puget Sound and the fresh waters of Lake Washington. In the fall of 1851, two brothers, Arthur and David Denny, landed at Alki Point on the west side of Elliot Bay. Soon after their arrival they moved to the eastern shores where they established the small settlement that would become Seattle.
The name Seattle is believed to derive from the Duwamish Indian leader named Sealth. Initially the primary industry in Seattle was lumber and booming cities such as San Francisco provided much of the demand that kept Seattle on the map.
