kentucky stateKentucky became a U.S. state on February 14 1859, as the 33th state. It was the first region west of the Allegheny Mountains to be settled by American pioneers.
Harrodsburg was established as the first settlement in 1774.

The largest cities in Kentucky are Louisville, Owensboro, Bowling Green, Covington, Richmond and Hopkinsville.

  • The Kentucky Derby is the oldest continuously held horse race in the country. It is held at Churchill Downs in Louisville on the first Saturday in May.
  • The Bluegrass Country around Lexington is home to some of the world’s finest racehorses.
  • Cheeseburgers were first served in 1934 at Kaolin’s restaurant in Louisville.
  • Chevrolet Corvettes are manufactured in Bowling Green.
  • Kentucky is where both Abraham Lincoln, President of the Union, and Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, were born. Born less than one hundred miles and one year apart.
  • Cumberland is the only waterfall in the world to regularly display a Moonbow.
  • The song “Happy Birthday to You” was the creation of two Louisville sisters in 1893.
  • Location

    To the south it border Tennessee for 425 miles (685 km), on the southeast with Virginia. West Virginia on the northeast. Top north, follows the Ohio River to the Mississippi, to Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. South west is Missouri.

    Climate

    Kentucky has a moderate, humid climate, with abundant rainfall. The south and lowland regions are warmer. In Louisville, the normal monthly mean temperature ranges from 33°F (1°C) in January to 76°F (24°C) in July.
